Internal Reflection Spectroscopy by N J Harrick and a great selection of related books, art and collectibles available now at Total internal reflection • critical angle - when the angle of refraction (r) becomes equal to 90 degrees and Snell's law reduces to: sin(q) = n(1)/n(2) n(1) ≠ n(2)where (q) is termed the critical angle c When the critical angle is exceeded for a particular light wave.

The history of internal reflection spectroscopy (IRS), also known as attenuated total reflection spectroscopy (ATR), began nearly two centuries ago with the observation by Newton [l] of an evanescent field in a lower index of refraction medium in contact with a higher index of refraction medium in which a propagating wave of radiation undergoes total internal reflection (TIR).   Internal reflection spectroscopy is a mid‐infrared technique that has become an important tool in forensic laboratories. It is rapid, easy to use, nondestructive, and inexpensive. This chapter presents a comprehensive summary of the theory and applications of the technique, which is also known as attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectroscopy.

Internal Reflection and ATR Spectroscopy is a unique contribution to the field of spectroscopy, offering derivations of the formulae frequently used in the field and examining important underlying physical mechanisms that are typically not addressed in spectroscopy texts.

The book features detailed coverage of such topics as: Light propagation through absorbing materials; Reflection at the interface between two media; Phenomena of internal reflection 3/5(1).

Reflection of light is a surface phenomenon—it is strongly dependent on the nature of the surface and can therefore be used to study surfaces. If the surface is flat and smooth, the nature of the reflection is called specular, i.e., mirrorlike, and obeys the simple law that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection.

Dewald, Joseph Wang. Spectroelectrochemical detector for flow-injection systems and liquid chromatography. The first book available devoted entirely to Internal Reflection Spectroscopy (ATR).

Internal Reflection Spectroscopy discusses the theory, instrumentation and applications of ATR spectroscopy. It provides the necessary background for the practical spectroscopist to apply. Most IREs enable multiple internal reflections, a prerequisite for monolayer and sub-monolayer spectroscopy, and referred to as MIRE.

A variety of external reflection techniques are in use. In specular reflection (SR), the radiation reflected from the front surface of a bulk sample is collected. SR is often measured at or near-normal incidence. ATR-IR is based on the total internal reflection of a light beam at an interface formed between two media.

The resulting field at the interface is used for spectroscopy. The evanescent nature of this field allows one to probe the layer close to the interface formed between the internal reflection. Internal Reflection and ATR Spectroscopy. by Milan Milosevic.
